A 19th century boulle work and ebonised wood box dating around 1860. It has an unusual scalloped lid and a drop front and perhaps was made to fit something specific originally. The interior is of superb quality with birds-eye maple finished in a manner which makes the grain resemble satinwood. The lid and fall front are inlaid with boulle work and the rest of the box is finished in gloss black. There is a lock, and the latch does throw, but does not engage with the locking pawl due to movement in the lid over the years. It stands on four turned feet and makes for a lovely display item. Lock throws but will not latch. Some restorations - the fall front hinges and areas around these, the turned feet and the lock body screws are replacements. Normal age related wear, marks and indents. The red inlay surrounding the brass is crazed. See images for general exterior condition. Height: 13.5 cm (5 1/4 inch) Width: 26.7 cm (10 1/2 inch) Weight: 860 grams (before packing) Stock Code: 1773 MR18-5.
